Draft of Representation
My engineer friends: I have so much homework!
Me: Ugh, I know right?
Engineers: I have to design a bridge by midnight, what about you?
Me: I have to draw pictures of dogs. I'm under so much stress right now.
Anyways, here they are, based on the reference pictures I took.
I really do not like the front facing dog. I thought I would so that I could show his eyes off, but it kind of gives me these vibes:
I like the profile one more. I think it has more character and is a bit more dynamic. My problem now is that for an 8*10 canvas, I think there will be a lot of negative space, which I'm not sure exactly how to fill. I'm not sure I want to do a realistic background, because the painting is about the dog and I want people to be able to translate him into different settings. I might do some sort of color transition or pattern to keep it interesting.
As far as realism, I want it to be recognizable as Darby, so it will have his fur patterns and color and realistic proportions. However, I think I'll simplify the shapes and make it a little more cartoon-y for the sake of cuteness and avoiding the Uncanny Valley.
I'm going to be honest, I haven't started writing the text yet, but I'm going to stick with a one paragraph, 3rd person description of what I thought of Darby when I met him. I want use positive language like "Darby was excited to go for a walk with me, in his own quiet way", rather than "this poor dog is suffering and needs someone to take him away from this horrible place".
So, I'd like some feedback on good background ideas and I apologize if this post is a little incoherent. I'm trying to clean out my fridge right now and I think my tomato soup was a little on the expired side. If I miss class on Monday, that's why.
For some reason these don't open up. I'm sorry because I would like to see them!
